History

Bison Bookbinding & Letterpress started life as the more succinctly titled Bison Bookbinding Company, in Iowa City, IA in 1999 — the brainchild of Midwestern book artist, Carly James. Having worked in the commercial printing field for several years, Carly studied book arts, letterpress and printmaking at the University of Iowa and the Oregon College of Art & Craft, in Portland.

Bison opened its doors in Bellingham, Washington, in October 2004. Five years on, the shop has grown to amass a diverse collection of presses and tools from the 19th and early 20th century.

Carly, Kevin and their talented staff have grown the business into an artistic hub of their community, working with scores of businesses and individuals to create a reliable source of unique graphic design, high-quality printing, and timeless book arts.
